This week's pick is my house rework of Lizzo - About Damn Time.
About Damn Time came out around the time when the world started opening back up after 2 years of covid restrictions and re-opening of nightlife had just been announced. This was such exciting news and a huge relief at the same time. We were finally able to turn up the music and feel normal again. The song was oozing happiness and joy, and her music was just what we needed to feel good and celebrate the new phase.
When my hubby and I watched Lizzo perform the song on Saturday Night Live, we knew it would become an anthem of 2022. He liked it so much that he asked me to put the song in his birthday mix. I decided to do my own take of the song so I can play it in my sets. I did it on the classic soulful house tip while maintained the funky and soulful vibe.
I was looking for something extra to add that could enhance the 70's disco flavor and thought of the gorgeous strings on Bebu Silvetti's Spring Rain (1975), which was sampled by a Japanese band, Denki Groove on Shangri-La (1997). The strings are so beautiful and timeless. I dropped them in the second half of the mix and that completed the mix like the strawberry on a shortcake.
I'm very happy with this mix as I played it many times and watched people dance to it. It gave me such a boost because it's ultimately why I make my mixes. I was also very happy when I shared it on soundcloud and got very positive feedback. I'm so glad that Lizzo won Record of the Year and Purple Disco Machine won Best Remixed Recording for his remix of this song at the Grammy's.
