Welcome to my music blog, sakura galactic mixes! In this blog I will be sharing my mashups, edits and mixes from the past 20 plus years with little stories behind them.

To celebrate Sydney Mardi Gras and WorldPride, I'm going to share my Sydney Mardi Gras 2022 Recovery Mix. This is basically the set that I had intended to play at Mardi Gras Laneway last year but couldn't because of covid. I won't go into details here but, instead, I'm going to share my first time going to Mardi Gras Party as a punter and my first time as a DJ. As they say, you always remember the first time.

It was February 1999, about a month after I moved to Sydney from Japan. My friend Peter, whom I met at the film festival, gave me the best introduction to gay Sydney and took me to Mardi Gras Parade and the after party. It was a very eye-opening experience for me because it was my first gay pride and I had never been to a dance party. I remember feeling excited and safe to be surrounded by so many people like me. The highlight of the party was watching the shows and dancing with thousands of people. A while after the main show we spotted this gorgeous girl dancing near us and we recognized her costume from the show. She was having a great time and we chattered with her for a bit. We thought she was one of the dancers but found out the next day it was actually Dannii Minogue herself!

In my DJ career I have been fortunate enough to deejay at Mardi Gras events including Mardi Gras Party and Laneway. The first time I played at Mardi Gras Party was in 2003. It was the year when New Mardi Gras ran the party to rescue the old Mardi Gras which bankrupted the year before. I played in City Live (funky house / anthems room) from 4am to 7am, and I still remember playing from the 2nd floor overlooking the dance floor. The vibe and energy of the venue was electric - the place was packed and people were dancing on every floor and even on the stairs. I had the best time playing to so many people and watching people dance. I was in a very happy place and the 3 hour set went by in a blink.

I'm very excited to be back in Sydney for Mardi Gras and WorldPride. Mardi Gras is and will always be my number one favorite pride festival in the world. It's a happy place where I feel I belong to the community and I have so many wonderful memories. My gigs start tonight at Thick 'n' Juicy Welcome Party and I look forward to playing my sounds and celebrate pride with old and new friends over the next couple of weeks.
